ReplyDeleteThanks for this great compilation with lots of great tunes, which were ruined, to my ears, by the 80s drum sound. I think Sly started messing around with this new synthetic sound, and unfortunately many followed him.
ReplyDeletePersonally I like Sly & Robbie's early 80's new style a lot, however during the 80's the drum sound became increasingly too heavy with lots of reverb, also in mainstream pop music. To my ears I would not say it ruined the tunes here but later on rather overemphasized them in that way. To me it is not too bad on this album compared to some other producers output from mid to late 80's and it can also have its charm in the dancehall music, for example on tunes from the Powerhouse label.
